Where acoustic carpet works best

Carpet works in two ways. Its soft pile absorbs sound inside the room, which calms echo, and with a good underlay it softens footsteps and dropped objects before they reach the floor below. On the tile and marble floors common in UAE homes, that difference is easy to hear.

It is a natural choice for bedrooms and upper floors in apartments, hotel rooms and corridors, offices (often as carpet tiles), prayer rooms, majlis areas and media rooms. In a villa home cinema it is almost standard, because it removes reflections from the floor and keeps the room comfortable to sit in.

Carpet is not a sound barrier on its own, though. It will not stop voices passing through a wall, and it does little for low bass. If the problem is noise between rooms, carpet works best as one part of a wider plan.

How we supply and install it

Wall-to-wall carpet is laid over an underlay and stretched onto gripper strips around the room. Carpet tiles are laid onto a suitable adhesive, which makes replacing a worn or stained tile simple later. Either way, the subfloor must be clean, dry and level first. Where a hard floor is staying, an acoustic floor underlay under a new finish may suit better. In Dubai we also think about how the carpet will cope with sand, foot traffic and regular cleaning.
