Where door seals work best

A door is usually the weakest point of a quiet room. Even a well-built wall loses much of its value if there is a gap around the door leaf, because sound travels through any air path. Closing that gap is often the most noticeable single improvement you can make.

Typical uses in the UAE include bedrooms next to a noisy corridor or living area (our soundproof bedroom guide covers the whole room), home offices, home cinemas, meeting rooms, clinic consultation rooms and hotel rooms. Seals are also a key step if you want to soundproof an apartment without renovation, because they can usually be added to the doors you already have.

How they’re fitted

A typical kit has two parts. Perimeter seals fit into or onto the frame along the top and sides, so the door closes against a continuous soft gasket. An automatic door bottom is set into, or fixed onto, the bottom of the leaf: when the door closes, a seal drops down to meet the floor or threshold, and when it opens the seal lifts so it does not drag.

Good fitting is about adjustment. The seals must press evenly without making the door hard to close or stopping the latch from engaging. The door itself also sets a limit: a light hollow-core door will seal better, but sound still passes through its face, so for studios and cinemas we may suggest wooden acoustic doors instead.
