Diffusion and absorption: what’s the difference?
Absorbers soak up sound energy. Diffusers keep that energy in the room but scatter it, breaking one strong reflection into many weaker ones spread out in direction and time. The room stays open and natural, without hard echoes or flutter between parallel walls.
A room treated only with absorption can sound dull, a common mistake in home studios, so most good rooms use both. Neither stops sound leaving the room; our guide to acoustic panels vs soundproofing explains that difference.
QRD, skyline and geometric diffusers
A QRD (quadratic residue diffuser) is a row of wells of different depths, set by a number sequence, which return sound slightly out of step and spread it evenly. A one-dimensional QRD scatters in one plane; a skyline, or two-dimensional, diffuser uses a grid of blocks of different heights and scatters in both. Geometric diffusers, such as curved or pyramid shapes, spread sound more simply and are often chosen for their looks. Deeper diffusers work down to lower frequencies, and listeners need some distance from a diffuser for its reflections to blend.
Where diffusers go in studios and home cinemas
In a control or mixing room, diffusers usually go on the rear wall behind the listening position, with absorption at the front and at the first reflection points. In a home cinema, they are often used on the rear wall and on the side walls behind the seats, so surround sound feels wide. Our villa home cinema guide shows how they fit with the rest of the room.
How we supply and install them
Diffusers are usually made in timber or MDF, finished to suit the interior and fixed with concealed fixings, planned around speakers and screens. Our own team installs across all seven emirates; to Saudi Arabia and the other GCC countries we supply only.
